Q: What does SEO mean?


A: SEO stands for search engine optimisation.  It’s a really important aspect of a website to allow the search engines to find relevant websites.  Read the section on SEO in the resources section.

Q: My domain is registered in someone else’s name, what should I do?


A: Visit www.nominet.org.uk to find out what action you can take to rectify the situation.

Q: Do I need a privacy policy on my website?


A: If you are collecting personal data it is advisable to have a privacy policy on your site which outlines what your business does with the data.  Register on the site to download detailed information on legal issues.

Q: Can I use pictures downloaded from competitive sites?


A: No, unless you have their authority and they are either their own images or copyright free images which you are authorised to use.

Q: The navigation headings on my site are in different places on the various pages, is this the right way to show the navigational headings?


A: Navigation should be intuitive and ideally should be in the same position on every page.  The best places for the main navigation are usually either horizontally across the top or vertically down the left hand side.

Q: My friend’s son has offered to build me a website; do you think this is a good idea?


A: Your website presence is vital to the success of your business.  Would you ask him to service your car and will you still know him in two years time?

Q: I don’t know how to write text that will motivate potential customers, what should I do?


A: Copy writing is an art and copy writing for the web involves not only inspiring copy but also requires optimisation.  I suggest you involve a professional marketer or copywriter to assist you as your site will work far better with sales driven text.

Q: I have an existing business and plan to launch an online shop as an extra sales channel, where do I start?


A: Read through the sections on creating an online shop and selecting a web designer.  This is an important development in your business and it is recommended that you initially consult a marketing specialist who should be able to provide advice on the best course of action.

Q: My customers sometimes tell me that my site isn’t working but it’s fine on my computer. How do I check it?


A: Refresh your browser to check that your site is operating correctly.  Additionally ask your web designer to check it across commonly used browsers e.g. Firefox, Internet Explorer etc as sometimes when the browsers are upgraded the website appearance can alter and might need some minor coding amendments.

Q: I’ve fallen out with my website designer and want to move it to another provider.  What action should I take?


A: Hopefully, your old provider will be reasonable and be prepared to hand over the site management to a new provider. Most will want to do this if a business relationship has soured however you may need to take legal advice if they fail to cooperate.
